Francis Sling: One Artist, Both Sides of Willemstad

Guests on both our Otrobanda and Punda tours stop for the same reason: a wall that's more than paint. A lot of them trace back to one artist, Francis Sling.

Meet Francis Sling, the Artist Behind Some of Willemstad's Best Known Murals

Guests on our Otrobanda tour stop for a mural of a plucked chicken hanging on a clothesline. Guests on our Punda tour stop for a completely different wall, warm scenes of everyday island life. Different neighborhoods, different moods, same artist behind both. His name is Francis Sling.

Who Is Francis Sling?

Sling grew up in Curaçao and studied graphic design in Amsterdam before coming home to paint full time. He's not just a muralist either. He paints on canvas, carves wood, sculpts, and writes music and poetry on top of it. He's a two-time Amigoe Express award winner, and one of his murals got him nominated for the Street Arts Awards Benelux, picked out from over 600 artists across the region.

His style is loud on purpose. Warm, tropical colors, deliberately messy lines. He's said it himself, nothing in nature is a straight line, so why should a painting be. And he doesn't stay on one side of the bay. His work shows up in both Otrobanda and Punda, and the two pieces couldn't be more different from each other.

See Both, In One Ride

You can walk to either mural on your own, but our Willemstad Combined Tour rides both sides of the bay in one trip, so you don't have to choose.

Want to keep it to one side instead? The Otrobanda Historic & Arts Tour and Punda Historic & Arts Tour each run guided or self-guided, daily, out of the Cruise Terminal Area.

Bring your camera. These aren't murals you want to just hear about.
